You need this product if your device's USB 3.x or C ports don't support HDMI over USB. My gaming laptop, which already has an HDMI port, doesn't support it. So I ordered Startech for a multi-monitor setup (Thunderbolt + USB3 for external monitors + laptop screen) on the MacBook Air E2014.
