I have a 2002 Avalanche that I had to replace the mast base on (lots of injuries too). I ordered GM part numbers for the base and mast, so I didn't attempt to assemble them prior to installation. It turned out that the base is 7mm, and the mast is 6mm. I was looking for a 7mm mast and came across this adapter. It took 2 minutes to use the adapter and it worked great! I highly recommend this if you find yourself in the same situation.
