Very happy with this purchase. I had never used an overlock machine so I was looking for a good, simple, durable and easy to use machine. I've heard horror stories about how difficult it is to apply stitches, so I specifically looked for something that didn't require surgical glasses and hemostats to adjust. Brother Designio DZ1234 seemed like the best combination of low cost, reliability and ease of use. He seems to be durable. It's durable and relatively quiet. I had it out of the box and set it up within 20-30 minutes after reading the instructions. Threading was easy: the threading path is indicated in the manual, and the machine itself has colored arrows showing the path for each thread. So I did it pretty quickly and then. the machine didn't work. I pressed the presser foot but the needles didn't move. I could hear the motor turning and the machine sew when I turned the wheel by hand, but didn't sew when I used the presser foot. So I spent a few hours reading troubleshooting guides, checking the manual, checking the manual again, searching online for clues, etc., and finally I took the lid off the machine and looked inside. It turned out that the belt had fallen off during transport. I put the belt back on and everything worked. After that I sewed the seams and I had no problems. A few Tipps: Take the thread that comes with the machine, admire the very bright colors, then throw it in the trash or use it as a cat toy, or as a fat absorber for bacon, or for anything other than sewing. It's really weak, the bobbin thread will snap if you look at it sideways. Just count on going to your local sewing store and buy some yarn right away. The serger is delivered without machine oil. You have to oil it. Get some oil while buying real dental floss. When the manual says to thread the machine one at a time, that means that if the thread breaks you'll have to rethread EVERYTHING or you'll end up with a tangle. Just get used to it and do it. Overall I am very happy with this purchase. If I ever need to upgrade to a more advanced serger I will consider Brother machines first. - When the manual says you have to thread the machine one at a time, that means you have to rethread ALL if the thread breaks, or you'll end up with a tangle.
