Review on LaCie Professional USB C External STHA10000800 by Christopher Bacho

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The struggle to make it work properly.

I bought this drive as a fast USB 3.0 drive to add to my wife's 2.5TB photo library to save on our iMAC with internal storage 3 TV drive. The operating system and other document files began to fill the entire 3TB drive. So I bought a cheaper 5TB drive to copy my Apple Photo Library to, but it was too slow. Apple Photos wasn't very responsive. This LACIE D2 Professional drive is much faster. The 2.5TB Apple Photo Library copied from the main drive to the Lacie drive about 1/3 times faster than a standard large external drive. The Professional's 5-year warranty also gives me peace of mind that it will handle the frequent Photo read/writes. I can keep my 5 year old iMac for a few more years before spending $5,000 on a new iMac. I would have given it a higher rating, but there were many difficulties setting up the Lacie drive. At first the external drive couldn't find the Mac Finder. It then mounted when I restarted the iMac but disappeared when the Mac went to sleep. The only way to find the drive after hibernation is to restart your Mac. I reformatted. I installed and ran the LACIE toolkit and d2 disk management software, but these Lacie tools did not install properly. The LaCie software never worked. Check for d2 firmware updates. I tried downloading the Lacie tools from their website. I went through the boot commands that reset the Mac. In the end I found the right combination of new partition/disk format with the latest Mac OS update. This works very well now. My wife has no problems with Mac Photos and her 2.5TB photo library on an 8TB d2 Professional Lacie drive. But Lacie's software tools still don't work on the Mac. My new but slower 8TB drive is now my new backup drive for both the Lacie internal and external drives.
