They are **NOT** airtight. I had an infestation of food moths and bought these to protect my flour and rice. After throwing away the contaminated food, I placed my rice (which was in a plastic bag in my pantry) in one of these containers. A few days later I found larvae in my container. The internet says food moths can get into sealed plastic bags. Despite many reports from people saying they have the same problem, I assumed food moth eggs were already in my factory-sealed rice bag. I threw away the rice, washed the container thoroughly, bought new rice, and filled the container. The very next day I had ENTIRE PRAYERS in my "airtight vacuum" rice container. You won't secure your food, and the pantry moth will climb in, eat the contents, and continue to multiply.
