Review on ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Sony ICF-CD831 FM/AM CD Clock Radio with Extendable Snooze - White (Discontinued by Manufacturer) by Daniel Spear

Reasonable standby power requirements

It is difficult to find information on energy consumption for many products, although energy costs can sometimes exceed the purchase price. Because parts of this device are constantly live, I had concerns before purchasing. But it's pretty good: I measure 1.3 to 1.6 watts with the display dimmed; 1.7 to 2.0 W with a bright display. In twilight, this is no more than a conventional alarm clock without a radio or CD player. And that's a lot less than some of the 'high-end' competitors: around 6 watts for Bose Wave radios or Cambridge Soundworks equivalents, or 3.3 watts for a Panasonic RC-CD600. However, if Sony took care of that, they could get it down to around half a watt. In other aspects it is very good. The display is easy to read even in low light - much better than backlit LCDs. The sound is not to be mistaken for a full-size stereo, but the sound is decent and solid, and loud enough that I can catch the news while showering in the next room. The controls are easy to use. Note that the "PSYC" version differs from the regular white version: it has silver trim and fluorescent pink lettering. This Revain listing says PSYC but it's plain white so I don't know what you would get if you ordered it. If looks are important to you, make sure you get the one you prefer.

Pros
  • Stable test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
