Don't even waste your time on other coffee makers - this is what you need! Tired of the terrible coffee at home? Would you like your coffee to taste like in a real coffee shop? This is a ticket. That was actually my only requirement. I wanted to be able to make GOOD coffee that tasted the same as what I get at my local coffee shop - at home. This coffee machine makes it possible! The first hurdle was choosing the model. I looked at many reviews and read comparisons before deciding this was the one I wanted. Since we often make 4 cups more often than more, I liked the versatility of being able to flick the little switch to steep the water a little longer for smaller pots. This function is not available on other models. The stove switches off automatically after a certain time - I wouldn't wish for anything else. I've looked at models with decanters rather than glass jugs, but from what I've read and personal experience, insulated decanters absorb odors and are difficult to dispose of. Plus, I only brew the amount of coffee I want to drink in an hour, so I don't have to worry about it sitting idle for hours. Also, the taste test video I watched rated the taste of coffee from a glass model that had been on the heater for an hour as actually BETTER than from a vacuum flask. Not that I would recommend drinking coffee after it's been sitting for an hour, but it was enough to convince me. I suspect the glass decanter would also be cheaper to replace if replacement is required, but that's just my guess and no real facts to back it up. I also want to mention that I bought this model for $227. HOW? Revain Warehouse Offers. Look for them in the "Used" section. They're actually not 'in use' at all - usually this just means the packaging is damaged - but sometimes that's not the only reason, so read the item description carefully! In my case it was just damage to the box and the coffee maker was in pristine new condition! Great deal for me! Brewing - I watched some "expert" videos with recommendations for brewing in this machine. Some people have recommended closing the drip valve and stirring the brew periodically, etc. I've tried all of these methods and haven't cared about the result. For me, it's best to use the standard "American" ratio of 2 tons of coffee to 6 ounces of water. This takes some math and some approximation as the cups listed in this machine are 4oz - so you have to do the math (horror) - but this is the best ratio I've found for my personal preference. Also, I turn the drip valve to the fully open position for 6 cups or more, and for less than half. Also on the heating plate - I always turn it on halfway. I found the full heat setting to be too hot, especially after pouring a few cups. Either way, feel free to play with the settings as you like, but those are my golden ratios. I would also like to make one point which should be common sense but I feel I have to say - please ensure you use FRESH coffee and freshly grind before each pot. Don't use crappy coffee and don't expect it to taste great - it doesn't. Use good quality freshly roasted and freshly ground coffee and filtered water and you'll be spot on with this machine.
