The tool allows you to grip the wire firmly without scratching the surface. But the grooves weren't as useful as I had hoped. Look carefully at the picture of the pliers. Notice how shallow the grooves are? It is very difficult to tell by touch whether the wire is in or around the groove. To help me spell it out better I've marked the sides and top with a black marker - with the added benefit of being able to wrap the round side instead of the flat. Then I realized that I could "calibrate" any pliers by inserting a loop or adapter ring at the tip and marking that spot on each pliers with sharp ends, and doing the same thing. So I gave them a 4 star rating - they are good pliers but the groove is not deep enough to do it by touch and the same results can be achieved with regular pliers.
