Review on Eshopps AEO14005 Reef Sumps Rs-100: The Perfect Addition to Your Aquarium Tank by Doug Destruction

Revainrating 5 out of 5

RS-100 Very good sump at a great price

I first ordered the RS-75 for my 65 gallon reef rig. After I calculated the volume in gallons it came out to about 12.5 and I found that there just wasn't enough room for effective filtration and a skimmer. I quickly canceled the order and placed a new order for the Eshopps RS-100 swamp. Measuring 24 x 12 x 16 inches, the maximum volume is around 20 gallons. It's a lot better for a 65-gallon setup considering it's only $25 more for nearly double the filter room. Although it's rated for 100-125 gallons. I would say that this is an overestimate. For these swamps, when in doubt, choose the FOLLOWING SIZE. Just make sure it fits your stand before ordering. In general, I like the design very much. It arrived well packaged and checked for all seals. It comes with a 7" round filter sock, a sponge that fits between the baffle to eliminate micro-bubbles, and 3ft corrugated hose with PVC nozzles on the ends to fit a standard 1" bulkhead to fit. Before installation I rinsed all parts with R/O water. so I'm guessing it's around 450-550 gph) I noticed a lot more noise than I'm used to. I removed the corrugated tubing that I had supplied with the hose and replaced it with custom PVC sections. Instead of water collecting in a hose and then being thrown out in a giant wave of water, the overflow compartment in my tank now stays at a constant height. Problem solved? Nearly. The next step to achieve total silence was as another reviewer mentioned. Use extra PVC pipe (mine turned out to be about 7 inches long) to get into the divider where the water enters the sump through the filter sleeve. like a little cauldron of boiling water. Trust me, it's a lot quieter than rushing water. 26/14: So far this swamp has exceeded my expectations. Since my original post, I've added the RLSS R6-I Internal Protein Skimmer (which I love and also 100% recommend). The skimmer base measures 9" x 6.7". I can angle this skimmer perfectly into the first section of this swamp. At first I was dissatisfied with the amount of microbubbles that came out of the skimmer and back into the tank through the foam wall. Add an extra piece of Eshopps foam (same as in the baffle) next to the slotted spoon to ensure there are no more microbubbles. I am also still using 2 units of Elite Chempure and have additionally started adding/replacing 1 sachet of Purigen and Fosgard every 2-3 months. I only have about 2 pounds of live rock in my swamp right now. Water parameters are always perfect, even too much. The pool lives on this great filter setting.
