Used in HOB Aqua Clear filter for bottomless tank together with another type of porous bio-media. So far the tank has been found to loop, so that's good. product description is correct; it doesn't feel "flaky" like the Bio Max that comes with Aquaclear. This should take some time. Touching a dry piece with a small amount of water sucks it up immediately so I can say it's pretty effective at generating nitrifying bacteria. 500g should be enough for a reasonably stocked 50 gallon tank, especially when supplemented with substrate or mixed with other media.
