Review on ALTRA Superior 10.5 Men's Trail Running Shoes in Black by Jon Robertson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Fewer laces, sharper corners than Superior 2

This is a preview as I've only ridden it about 20 miles so far. I can't solve the wear issue (which was an issue with the Superior 2). My Superior 2 are almost worn out so I had to get something newer. Pictured above is a worn Superior 2. The Superior 4 fits the same as the Superior 2 (ie 11.5 is my usual 10.5ft). The upper of shoe 4 has a firmer material (compared to shoe 2 with more mesh). Compared to the Superior 2, there are only four pairs of eyelets (5 pairs on the 2) and they start farther from the toes. At the front of the lacing there is a cute eyelet for gaiters. Notably, the plastic binding is stiffer at the top of the laces and has fairly sharp corners under the padding, and the tongue is sewn all the way up on one side. This means the edges tend to dig into my ankles to the point where I've thought about getting them back. I have found that when I use the lower top lace holes (or eyelets) the pressure on the corners is greatly reduced and I can wear the shoe with reasonable comfort. Traction is pretty good in dry mud, gravel and dirt, about the same as the Superior 2s.

Pros
  • With proper care, it will last a lifetime
Cons
  • Can cause bruising
