Review on SOLIOM S600: Advanced Home Security Camera with 360° Pan Tilt, Motion Detection, Solar Power, and Color Night Vision by Brian Martin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good camera for the price, easy setup, no features compared to expensive cameras

Cameras work as advertised (I have 2). I ordered extra batteries (18650) from Revain (separately) and added them to the cameras. As with all cameras, finding the right mounting location is the hardest part. It must have a good Wi-Fi signal, which means you will probably need to add an outdoor Wi-Fi extender or outdoor wired LAN antenna or indoor Wi-Fi extenders on the interior walls, closest to the outdoor location of the camera. I ordered the WiFi extenders (TP-Link AC750 WiFi Extender RE230) separately, also from AMZN, and set up the extenders and cameras inside before installing the cameras outside. I had to run the extension cords to different places in the house to get the best possible connection to the camera and basic Wi-Fi. The SOLIOM+ app works pretty well and the camera stays connected to the wifi. As far as I can tell, all WiFi issues have been with my signal and extension cables, not the camera. My camera (and solar panel) are in the shade under trees and we had a few dark rainy days, but after a few weeks I had no problem charging my battery and the cameras stayed online all the time, day and night. Also, I added memory (SD) cards to each camera before installation. I record all videos on SD. I tried activating a free (7 days?) trial cloud video storage via the SOLIOM+ app on my phone but it just didn't work. I wanted to test this cloud storage before sending money to a paid account, but that's on hold until I try to get the free trial working. The video quality from the camera is excellent, day and night - I use night vision mode by turning off the camera light and using IR. The pan/tilt works well, but you have to be aware that when you press the application's p/t keys, it's done in "fixed increments". There's no optical zoom, but you can "zoom" in the app using the phone's regular two-finger touchscreen. Also, there is no way to watch videos other than through the SOLIOM+ app on your phone. It would be very useful to update the firmware that provides standard network access from the camera to software like Blue Iris. It seems that most camera manufacturers have proprietary software or apps, so this manufacturer is nothing out of the ordinary. 1 downside - (at maximum motion sensitivity) the camera misses some activity (cars and people in the driveway). There's also a "bug" (I'd call it that) where motion activates just fine, but recording stops within the time limit you set, even though motion continues. The added video is not in the original clip or additional clips. All other movements are simply not recorded. On the other camera, which only sees the yard (and not the street, cars, people), the motion for falling leaves and flying bugs is activated. Only the most expensive ones (many times more expensive than these) don't have great motion controls, so given the price of these cameras it's not a complaint, just be aware of some limitations of less expensive cameras like this. So far this camera has worked fine in the weather of 80 to 20 (F) and heavy rain. A big problem is that when you write to an SD card, you can only *view* the saved video on your phone (in the SOLIOM+ app), but you can't download the video and save it to your phone or anywhere else - yourself have to open the camera, take out the SD card and then copy the video clips that way - which is pretty ridiculous. This is perhaps the only reason NOT to buy this camera. I assume, but have not tested, that videos on their cloud service can be downloaded to a PC or similar. There are video capture apps for Android that you can use to capture a video when you play it on your phone, but I haven't tried any of them either. The SOLIOM+ app should be updated as soon as possible to allow uploading videos from SD to phone storage.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • There are nuances
