No mess! Really no mess!
My 3 year old loves it! No need to put batteries in, they just light up the pen that matches the color of ink they want to use. It's a fun little touch, but not necessary. I would like the stamps to be bigger so he can color them in, it's just a print of the outline of the image. Overall no mess and fun, I would buy again.
