Review on Samsung P2370HD 23-inch Full HD Monitor by Allen Robinson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

excellent consumer model, fair professional

The P2370HD is an exceptional monitor for people with modest screen needs. On the downside, it's got very good color reproduction for a TN panel (more on that in a moment), absolutely fantastic connectivity, one of the fastest displays yet, and a bright, juicy picture only offset by average black levels and some backlight distortion for very dark images (dynamic contrast helps, but not in all situations). It doesn't have a hinge, a terrible omission, but it's still pretty stable on its (non-adjustable) base. It connects to 4:3 and 16:9 sources, even SD composite and component sources, as well as HDMI, DVI and VGA sources (although DualLink DVI-D is highly recommended), and the native resolution of 1920x1080 is perfect for 16:9. Movies and Blu-ray. So if you just need a very good TV or display for your home computer, stop reading now and get out your credit card. However, this is a *normal* monitor only for professional photography or graphics work. Like all TN displays, it suffers from slight but significant gamma changes when viewed more than a few degrees off-axis, and even at 6500K it has a slight pink tint, helped by a good color calibration, but with a corresponding reduction in gamma, can be compensated. Despite the 2.2 sRGB color space, this monitor performs much better closer to 1.8 or its native 2.7+ color space. The grayscale tests also show the faint banding you'd expect from a 6-bit display, which again is offset by dynamic range compression, but this also reduces the contrast range the monitor can offer. By the way, don't use Dynamic Contrast when you connect it to a PC or Mac, it's really very distracting. Adjust the contrast and brightness yourself. Note that all the things I have complained about will go completely unnoticed by probably 90% of customers and this monitor outperforms so many smaller displays that exhibit such issues much worse which is why I gave it four stars. However, for the 10% of us who want a display with perfect color and a little slower speed, an IPS panel is highly recommended, even for a display as good (for TN) as this one. As long as I keep mine to use as a... surprise! -- TV, buy an IPS panel for photography. But everyone else will love it.

Cons
  • The monitor buttons are too tight.
