I bought these as a precaution after a toddler in our community opened the front door one morning and left the house while his parents were asleep. I wanted to make sure our very young toddler hadn't acquired the ability without our knowledge. I installed the first lock on the inside of the front door. This made the doorknob, which our child hadn't noticed before, a compelling experimental object. She figured out the mechanism in about 5 minutes. The part that sticks out at the bottom where you press the tabs makes it easier for him to open the door. She may not be able to grab the handle, but she can squeeze the tabs together with both hands and squeeze the tab like a lever. This with the door closed. When the door is unlocked and the lock knob is pulled out, the gray rubber damper creates extra tension and completely disables the mechanism. The tabs don't even need to be pressed to turn the doorknob. They might be better used on an interior door without a lock knob. Oh.
