These stands work wonderfully for standard sized books! I have a set sitting on top of a dresser and they hold my many thicker books really well.However, these stands are not suitable for taller books or frequent use. I had the second set sitting at my desk holding my Dungeons & Dragons guide books (which are taller than many novels - about the size of a textbook), and they always had a tendency to give way under the weight of the books no matter how I stacked or positioned them. After about 2 weeks of fixing them nearly every day after they knocked over everything on that side of the desk, one of the bookends was effectively flattened by the books it was holding up, rendering it useless.I knew when I bought these that they probably would slide around a bit, but I also bought them specifically because they were taller than the average bookend and hoped the top was as sturdy as the bottom. But now I have a pancake.TLDR; these are great for minimal use with standard books, but not at all suitable for taller, textbook-sized books.
