The padded Pelican 1510 is a very well designed case. I recently bought a Canon ef500 f/4.0 lens and was immediately concerned about traveling with it. It's clearly too expensive and fragile to put in your checked baggage, and even if you put it in your carry-on you have to worry about it being damaged. 1510 has definitely allayed my concerns. It's simply durable, well constructed and effectively padded. The body of the case is very rigid and it feels like you could place a tray with anvils on it and the contents will be protected. The O-ring and two-stage fasteners make you think you can take it with you when diving and nothing gets wet. /2.8, 17-55 f/2.8, EOS 7D body, 1.4X extender and a few little things. It was tight but everything went well. The folding handle might be the 1510's weakest point, but it packs and unfolds easily and does the job perfectly. Sometimes, especially on smaller planes, I'm asked to check my carry-on baggage at the aircraft door. While it's a lot safer than checking the bag the usual way, I still want to be able to securely lock the 1510. I came across Tamperseal "SearchAlert Extended Hasp TSA Case Lock" #6435. For a very reasonable price you get a strong TSA approved lock. Of course I have two. I appreciate the stainless steel reinforcement that Pelican added to the latch holes on the case. I've been lugging a 1510 and a backpack filled with other gear on planes, in and out of rental cars, hotel rooms, and on the go for several weeks. without problems. Highly recommended.
