The double sieve is so small that it only pushes the coffee grounds far enough under until it builds up enough pressure for the boiling hot coffee to explode everywhere. I removed one of the filters and the problem remained. I lower the bar very carefully and slowly. Doesn't exist when brewing tea. I have another metal french press coffee maker that is smaller and very similar to this one, works exactly the same but didn't have this problem at all! Don't buy this if you plan on making coffee. If you've only ever made tea and need a large French press, this is your kid.
