Review on Portland Design Works Shovel Fender by Black Miller

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Extremely poor mount design

It's lightweight with good coverage and it works with my eyedropper. A fatal flaw is the fastening mechanism. I sent the first one back because after only a few hours of use it broke in the binding mechanism when I threw my leg over the bike and kicked it lightly. The next one broke after just a few hours of use when I was tightening it to keep it from dangling. I have all kinds of gear and have been climbing, skiing and mountain biking for decades. I've had numerous other fenders (sks, pdw, etc.) and never had this problem. The good news is that after your break (and it will, I almost guarantee) you can use a ski veil to clip it on and it looks casual but downright bombastic - see pic. But seriously, PDW engineers, as you read this from one engineer to another: do better. At this price it should be way better than what it actually is. Just make it over so that the attachment mechanism is a rubber band like in my picture. The plastic clasp is just awful.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Unfashionable
