I hate shaving! Who does not know it? I mean it's a daily job I could honestly do without! I find it interesting that companies trying to capitalize on this like to call it 'art'. True to the motto "Let's get back to the nostalgic art of wet shaving!" What a potty! Just give me a razor so I can wipe that shit off my face! When recently a razor I've been using for years phased out my 2-blade cartridges in favor of 3 or 7-blade replacements (seriously?) that cost more than double the price, I started shopping and am anticipating a resurgence of these old bumped safety razors - they are the same ones my dad used in the 70's! I watched a few YouTube videos and read a lot of reviews before finally deciding to try it. I bought this Viking straight razor because it was cheap, aimed for beginners like me, and had good reviews. I paired it with a 100 Falcon blade sheath, a Viking shaving brush and a regular shaving bowl. I used them the next morning. First of all, I think it should be noted that I shave in the shower as the last part of my shower routine - I've been doing it for many years. It's just so much more convenient - my face is already wet, my beard has been softening in the steam all along, and it saves the extra time and hassle of having to do it over the sink. I have a vapor proof mirror that sticks to the shower wall and there is a small razor holder at the bottom which makes it incredibly handy. My first shave with this new razor took a LONG time! I was very careful to maintain the correct head angle (30-45 degrees) and carefully took many small short shots. When I was done I thought it was the smoothest shave I've ever had, but at what price? The job took more than twice as long (does that mean I'm destined to be a razor?). But without a single cut or scrape, I shaved a little faster next time, and then a little faster after that, so after 5-6 shaves I'm back to my usual time. Any change takes time to adjust to, especially when you break up a routine you usually do in your sleep, like shaving! I've used the razor over a dozen times and only have a second blade which only cost eleven cents but gave me an amazingly close shave! I'm completely sold and won't be going back, sorry Gillette. As for the brush and bowl - well, they're back with Revain. They just weren't for those who didn't have the time or inclination to turn shaving into an art. The badger brush (of course, if you want to shave like an artist, your brush must be real badger hair) was spiky, and all that constant turning in the bowl just seemed unnecessary and, frankly, it took way too long. When I shave, I use Noxema because shaving creams and soaps are very drying to my skin, so at the risk of pissing off wet shaving fans who have nothing better to do than daydream about looking in the mirror in the morning , I just take a little lump . Noxema, slather it straight onto your face with your HANDS (outrageously barbaric I know) and then get down to business. lasts with an expensive multi-blade cartridge, but at a SHARE of the cost.
