Simple update installed by my 14 year old daughter

This review will help you if you want to try it in Apple for the first time. My daughter has a 2009 aluminum unibody MacBook (model 1278, found on the bottom of the MacBook). It came with a 160GB hard drive and after 3 years and 20,000 photos it was several GB full. I found out how to replace the hard drive on ifixit.com. I ordered this Hitachi 500 GB 7200 RPM drive. Don't worry, the original is Sata and this one is Sata II. Doesn't matter. It is backward compatible. I was also told by ifixit that I would need a Phillips 00 screwdriver, a Torx T6 screwdriver and a case for the external drive. I chose a quality Wiha screwdriver because there is nothing worse than a cheap screwdriver and you don't want to rip off the screws in your laptop. (Phillips Wiha 96100 Screwdriver with Precision Handle, 00 x 40 mm). I borrowed the T6 driver but would buy a Husky set from Home Depot. I bought a Vantec NexStar TX 2.5" SATA USB 2.0 external hard drive enclosure. All items under $80. We placed the drive in the enclosure and connected it to the computer with the USB cable that came with it. We downloaded Super Duper , a free amazing program that creates a copy of the entire Macbook drive to a new 500GB drive. Super Duper will tell you that he has successfully completed the task. Takes hours. I printed out the instructions from ifixit. Macbook turned off. My daughter followed the instructions and drilled the holes herself under my supervision. Be careful not to break the small screw, use a Wiha screwdriver to push it in while turning it to keep it from turning Remove the tab from the old disc and place it on the new disc. Do not touch the circuit side or drive connectors. Power on the unit and your Macbook will immediately recognize the new drive without missing a beat. Check the Finder and make sure you have enough free disk space now. My daughter was so proud that she made it herself without any experience. For now, let's leave the old hard drive intact and put it in an external enclosure. We can reformat it later and save it as an additional photo backup drive. Some reviewers mentioned noise but ours was very quiet so don't worry. Much luck.

Pros
  • Extended format, standard 4K sector size
Cons
  • Actually I don't like it, everything is fine
