We were delighted to receive a "fully working" nutcracker for my son. I was a bit concerned when it arrived in a damaged box, but when we took it out of the box everything was fine. My son immediately wanted to use it with some of the nuts we had. First, the cracker isn't designed for smaller nuts like pistachios (those that aren't cracked by hand). We also had problems with smaller tonsils. We haven't tried the walnuts yet, but I assume they will be too big. Using the hacking mechanism is not easy. I'm assuming someone with arthritis won't be able to use it much. Not only do you have to operate the rear handle with one hand, you also have to support the whole thing from the front with your right hand. Second, the Nutcracker's staff was very weak. It broke very easily. It also appears that this item was repaired before shipping. There were small blobs of blue glue on some of the joints. The beard begins to fall out as soon as one tries to scrape off the inevitable remnants of the shell after cracking nuts. Overall disappointed with the purchase. You can find decorative nutcrackers much cheaper. Since I've paid more for a working one and it's significantly less effective than a manual metal picker, I'm giving this item a low rating. It's cute and looks just like the picture. But you can get much better deals there.
