Review on Allied Brass FT 5 16TB ABZ Antique by Michelle Watson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Both newly designed and unfinished

This shelf is both newly designed and unfinished. It may be designed too simply, making installation unnecessarily complicated. The whole thing is held together by two threaded rods on either side, on which brass tubes slide and hold the shelves apart. The top and bottom nut/towel bar ends are drawn together to hold the towel bar securely and add rigidity to the entire structure. The problem is that in order to hang the shelf properly, you have to remove the top shelf and mounting brackets. So you can attach the mounting brackets to the wall first. If you do this, the entire shelf loses its structural rigidity and you will need two people to mount it to the wall. One person must hold the shelf sections together in the air while a second person threads the rods through the mounting brackets, installs the top shelf, and then screws the top onto the threaded rods. This whole process would be much easier if the mounting bracket was simply attached so you could put two screws in the wall and just slide the bracket over the screws. I think it would be difficult if not impossible for any average person to hang this shelf properly or not drop and break it. When assembled, this shelf is strong and sturdy. It's simple and well built, but heavy. He can weigh 5 pounds. The glass shelves are nice and thick. You'll need to make sure you screw into solid wood or use the wall anchors provided - I'd prefer to use better quality wall anchors or screw at least one side into a wall stud if possible. The manufacturer should seriously add a second set of wall mounts under the bottom shelf.
