Blu G91 Pro review: Good but not quite professional

First I want to tell you that I'm a Blu fan! I love their products and how they stand out from the competition by offering quality unlocked devices at a great price. You can typically get an unlocked GSM phone (T-Mobile, AT&T, etc.) for between $80 and $250. Although the price is cheap, they offer a lot of value. Second, I bought this phone with my own money and this review was not pre-approved by anyone before it was published. Pros: Price looks good Good screen Performance Cons: Speakers Camera Not a 5G design: We look with our eyes first and nobody wants to walk around with a phone that screams budget. This isn't an elementary school and they let me walk on Bobo. Instead, you're dealing with a design language that references Apple and Samsung. Yes, the back cover is plastic, but it looks very nice. There are two colors, but only the Graphite version was available at launch. Blu has stated that Moonstone, a pearly silver magenta color, will be available sometime in October, about a month from now. On the back is a rectangular array of glass-coated cameras (four, to be exact) as well as a fingerprint sensor, which I think is the best spot for it. The front of the phone is basically a screen with a hole in the middle of the top of the screen. There are two buttons on the right side, the power button and the volume rocker. Nothing unusual. And it also has a headphone jack which I'm glad they kept. Display: Speaking of the screen, you'll find a 6.7-inch LCD screen and the Blu has a 91.4% screen-to-body ratio. Basically like most iPhones and Samsung devices you will find today. The G91 moved the punch to the left corner, and I think I liked it a bit more. However, I watched tons of content on the screen and didn't really notice it. The display is FHD+, so the resolution is just over 1080p. The colors are bright and can be customized. The screen refresh rate is 60, which is not surprising at this price point. Movies and Instagram look great on this device. In the last 3 years they have taken steps to make their phones as fast as mid-range and even premium phones. They rock the MediaTek Helios G90 process. It's a slight step up from the G90T in the G90 Pro, but you won't notice any difference as the storage has been increased to 6GB. I haven't encountered any issues in normal use or gaming. I'm not a huge fan of mobile games, but I've tried Fortnite and Asphalt 9 and the games loaded pretty quickly. 128 GB of RAM is also great for this. Audio: Sound is good for phone calls, but a bit muffled through external speakers. Everything sounded great through headphones. I don't have much to say other than that this seems to be one of the areas that has suffered from the phone's budget. Cameras: Finally, there are the cameras I mentioned above. There are 4 cameras on the back and 1 on the front. The rear cameras are 5 MP wide, 48 MP main, 2 MP macro and 2 MP depth sensor. You don't get the quality of Google's Pixel camera, or even some of the lower-spec Samsung and iPhone models. If you want great photos, you either have to pick a more expensive phone or shoot in RAW (which is powered by...WOOT!) and edit the results yourself. The latter is a great feature that even some premium phones don't have. I'm not saying Photos isn't for the casual user, but if you're used to more automation, you might be disappointed. A macro lens could have been done without as 2MP doesn't give much of an end result at all. The front selfie camera is good in bright light, just don't expect much from it. Summary: I really want to love this phone. My main issue is that I've been waiting for this since the Blu G91 was released. I expected more. The G90 Pro was a big step up from the G90. It featured MediaTek's G90T processor, wireless charging, and "LiquidCooling" technology, whatever it is. Neither of these things came with the G91 Pro. They dropped the CPU, didn't mention "LiquidCooling" and left out something important...5G. I know it sounds weird, but with game streaming services like GeForceNow and Stadia adding more content, I think a gaming phone would need a high-speed connection. The price could be a factor but OnePlus has released a similarly priced device with 5G and a 90Hz display. I think we're going to see amazing things from Blu in the near future, but that's not entirely true. They basically just wanted to release a device by 2021 with Android 11+ storage. Mission accomplished, but it's hard to celebrate when some of the long-awaited features didn't quite make it to the Pro phone.
