I am using one of these in a solar generator box I am building. powers my 12v accessory that I have installed. To be honest I have no idea what makes it waterproof. I don't have a closed lid. I can say I've driven my Humvee through 2-3 feet of water and it gets wet where the fuse box is and everything stays on. Don't ask me how, but it works. Even a cheap 24V to 12V 40A step-down transformer seems capable of handling all the water it's exposed to. The first fuse box I bought has been working for about 2 years now. The lid is not very strong.
