Front is too long for short legged dogs

These coats are cute and well made. However, if you have a strong, short-legged dog, landing can be a problem. My Shih Tzu crosses are 15" long down the back and 17" across the chest. I ordered a medium size to get adequate back coverage. My youngest stepped on the front of her coat when she put her head down to sniff and then refused to leave. Front measures approximately 5 inches from neckline to hem. Also, the belly band didn't pull tight enough to hold the coat in place. My solution was to trim the front of the coat by 3 inches and narrow the slit towards the bottom. armpit. I then used the leftover velcro from the cut off portion of the front to lengthen the belly closure to get the perfect fit. In the first photo the fur is unchanged; the next shows what I cut off and the last photo is the finished altered coat. I'm a seamstress so I took the piping off and put it back on after trimming the excess but the fabric doesn't tear so you can just trim it if you can't sew. It took a bit of work, but it was easier than trying to make a dog coat from scratch. Someone should make coats for long legged, short legged dogs but I haven't found one, especially in this price range.
