Small pocket cameras like these are on the verge of extinction and are gradually being replaced by smartphones. Soon there will only be DSLRs and mirrorless cameras from major manufacturers, aimed at professionals and serious enthusiasts. The vast majority of the population already uses smartphones as their only camera, and soon it will be almost 100%. That's why a little gem like the PowerShot SD1400 IS is so valuable. He and similar cameras will soon be unavailable. I bought my SD1400 IS in December 2010, almost nine years ago, for $149. In those nine years I've bought half a dozen other Canon pocket cameras, including the excellent G7X. For my serious amateur photography I use the Rebel EOS SL2 which sits at the lower end of the enthusiast market and for family gatherings I usually use the G7X. But even with this collection of the "best" cameras, I still hold my SD1400 IS in high esteem for its combination of features, image quality and exceptional portability. With the battery built in, it always weighs less than my iPhone 8, but the small size and light weight mean little if the camera isn't capable of taking good pictures. Fortunately, this is not a problem with the SD1400 IS. The image quality is very good (see photos posted here from a trip to Southeast Asia, as well as close-ups around our house). You can even get good bokeh (see red dogwood leaves) as well as scene shots. Colors are rich and clear, and when combined with an impressive 14.1 megapixel resolution (for large prints) and 4x optical zoom (35mm equivalent to 28-112mm), this camera is still a real gem. At maximum zoom, this camera is even suitable as a portrait camera. I see this camera available at Revain for less than $50. If I didn't already have one, I would pick up one of these before they're all gone.
