If you want to try your hand at leatherworking to make sure you love it, you can't start for less. HOWEVER, you will buy new tools after your first project. In this set I bent or broke everything except the sledgehammer, 2mm stroking gauge, dies (of which there are quite a few) and a small spoon knife which I used once just for use. The swivel knife works too, but needs to be re-sharpened. I used 6 of the 7 needles and broke 4 almost immediately. The sledgehammer is a decent weight for easy detail work, but is flat (perpendicular to the handle) and mixed with the fact that they sloppily ground the end of the punch (they should be light be rounded) regularly let stamps fly around the room. The 3.5mm scoring gauge helped me with the project, but since half the teeth are slightly curved, I would have saved time by marking the holes with a ruler and punching them with an awl. That is, if it stayed in the pen long enough for me to finish it. Both stitches are made to my design. With all that said, I managed to make a pretty decent case and get some tools for my first few projects, and despite all the frustrations of having a mediocre arsenal of tools, I loved it and couldn't peel my skin off . The sledgehammer, dies, and rotary knife will likely stick with you for a while with some DIY modifications, but going to a leather goods store will be high on your list once you figure out that this is the hobby for you. Surprisingly, I would recommend purchasing this kit, but only as a teaching tool. My 4 star rating is based solely on this rating combined with the cost. Whether you have never tried leather goods and are curious or your kids want to try this set, this set is perfect. Also, I want to say that out of all the people I know who do this, all the videos I've watched, the classes I've taken, nobody has ever mentioned anything. the reason I will do this for the rest of my life. Treated leather is my new favorite scent.
