Review on Black Samyang SY14M-C 14mm F2.8 Ultra Wide Fixed Angle Lens for Canon with Enhanced SEO by Ojasvi Sharma ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I am satisfied with everything, the product corresponds to the description.

Deleted my enthusiastic comment from a year ago, tk. take a closer look at the lens. I noticed one feature that is little talked about: the lens is very sharp in the next tens of meters, and then the sharpness decreases exponentially. It decreases for all lenses, this is understandable, but there are lenses for which a noticeable blurring of clarity occurs at a much greater distance, i. E. more linear. For example, on my cheap Samsung NX 45mm f/2, the sharpness of treetops 200m away starts to look bad (pixels are indicated) only at 300x scale. On samyang, trees at 200 m turn into muddy brooms already at 100%. Etc. And this is noticeable even without magnification. Note that we are talking about the best aperture - f11, everything will be even worse at large apertures. Thus, the lens is good for shooting objects that are not too far away. In the case of shooting a landscape with a very distant middle and far ground, the foreground (5-10 m) should prevail in the photo, "setting" the sharpness. This of course applies to any landscape, but in the case of this lens - in particular. Unfortunately, the resolution characteristics of the lenses in the reviews are the result of shooting the worlds from a short distance (and here the Samyang shows a very good result, but on the FF - an outstanding result), but no one ever talks about the behavior of optics at different distances from the shooter. Since I am not interested in anything other than the landscape, this is a big drawback, I lower the rating score to 4. I will make a reservation, however, I shoot with cropped mirrorless cameras, perhaps this is the case. The shots taken on the FF are much better (I saw quite a few from different authors). So my review is most likely addressed to "mirrorless" people experimenting with manual optics.

Pros
  • Wide angle (very good for landscape) foreground sharpness, solid construction. Fast aperture - I shoot at f11 in any handheld light.
Cons
  • Insufficient mid-range and long-range sharpness when shooting a landscape

Its pros: Real shirik, aperture, not expensive, very small, light. Built-in hood. Case included. Got cons: Known problem with focusing. Strongly "protruding" front lens - you need to be very careful.
