Brought to the beach, the ball bearings destroyed

This reel might be good for flying kites in a meadow but we have to go to the beach to get the right wind and I think the sand has the clogged ball bearings. It worked fine the first few times, then it stunk. It's quite frustrating trying to wrap a kite and put an end to it. I sprayed compressed air and then WD40 in the center and it seemed to work. 1 or 2 more times. Then it closed again. I ended up taking the entire center cassette apart to fill the ball bearings with oil and saw that a lot of tiny particles of sand got inside. But after putting everything back together, it still didn't work. So maybe this roll will last longer if you don't take it to the beach? I was going to buy a plain plastic ring to replace it, but then I realized. If I just leave the middle cassette out, it's just a plastic ring. So I can still just use it for the outer ring (and stick a chopstick through the holes to hold the cord in place).
