East meets West in this versatile pen and brush combo. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is an undying "love" for this pen. I also consider myself a loyal subject. As this was my first mixed bristle brush pen I really didn't have the knowledge, experience and/or expectations. However, the rave reviews made me buy it. As he drove to his final destination, I was concerned. Did I pay too much? Are there better pens? will i like ink Do I have to pay for the return shipping? Ink converter and I hate ink? First, this pen is a dream. The ink is deep, rich, smooth and matte black. I've used it on a variety of surfaces (sumi, markers, watercolor paper, etc.) and had sensational results. Because the tip is made up of individual strands of hair rather than felt (like typical brush markers), the pen is very similar in strands and diameter to a watercolor brush, but is half the length of the brush's actual length. The diameter is about the size of a #2 or #3 brush (0.2 cm). The length of one brush is 0.9 cm (total length 13.5 cm), which allows better control of details, drawings and calligraphy. I am a sumi-e lover and was looking for a travel/detailing pen to sketch with. I used to use markers on the tips of brushes, but I could never get hold of this type of brush. This pen allows me to create textures and strokes unique to hairbrushes, as well as control and comfortable use of the pen. I now use the pen for many things including but not limited to sumi-e miniature painting, adding small details to my larger paintings and even writing.
