Review on Pyle Hi Speed Sports Action Camera - HD 1080P Mini Camcorder W/ 12 MP Cam by James Rogers

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I had a camera for a while

The camera is a great little camera that I bought mainly for gaming and taking videos on the go (not exactly for photography). I chose this camera over the GoPro for the simple reason that it's cheaper and still has the features I need. Used as a motorcycle mount, belt mount (for custom sports chest mount) and dash cam. all this was welcomed. Pros I haven't seen in other reviews: 120 fps allows for great slow motion footage that's hard to find on less expensive action cameras. This camera has it, it takes quite good pictures but it needs a lot of light (it wasn't very good indoors but it worked well outdoors). Indoors, the shutter speed shouldn't let in enough light, resulting in a dark image. A waterproof case is included. I haven't used it underwater yet, so I can't comment on the quality of the shots. One note: I put a case over the camera to protect it from bugs when taking the bike for a run and there was moisture in the case. Driven for 30 minutes and the housing window fogged up. I suggest you make sure you keep moisture out/wipe down the case with isopropyl alcohol or something similar. Cons: When the camera shakes on the bike, typically at around 35-40 mph, the camera produces fun rippling wave video effects. I didn't notice this when installing it on my body/car, but it should be noted that the brackets that screw in only appear to screw in partially. What I mean is that the screw doesn't engage a little more than 1 turn. Typical screws will need to be tightened more than twice to fully secure anything they attach to the camera that comes with the RF controller (e.g. a TV remote control). The receiver is next to the lens in the top left corner (see pictures on Amazon page). The tricky part is that you have to face the camera from the front to activate the camera/video. Depending on the setting (it starts in video mode) you won't be able to use any other mode (so if you're set to video you won't be able to take pictures). Also, the case obscures most of the RF receiver, making it difficult to use the remote control - during playback, the camera often freezes when you're shooting at 120fps. id suggests not using it but downloading it to your computer instead (works great with vlc and even a media player). In addition, when the camera freezes, you need to use a needle to press the reset button. Holding down the power button doesn't work, making it quite a challenge if you don't have a stylus. Finally, the camera isn't that heavy in quality, but the quality of the videos and images make up for it.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • The list will be long.
