I bought these primarily for use in Bishop, California where the soil is mostly hard sand, rock and granite. I ended up bending all of the aluminum poles that came with my tent to attach the tent to this surface. The aluminum stakes rested on the granite rock and stayed put, and the stake was still halfway up. And you know not to pitch a tent, especially if you expect it to be even a little windy. At this point the aluminum rods start to bend as I keep hammering them. But with these titanium rods I can keep pounding and not have to worry about them bending. These are indestructible. REI has sold some thinner titanium rods but they still flex. These titanium nails are the perfect thickness and can cut through rock. Aluminum pegs are great for grass and mud, but if you have to camp in an area that's mostly rocks or hard pack, these titanium nail pegs are the way to go.
