I have cleaned cars and tried all sorts of products: waxes, sealers, aerosols etc. I bought a new car and wanted to try sealant for extension of protection. Made a few mistakes which I found out later (should read the guide). Apply a thin layer, rub off quickly (don't wait for it to fade), easy enough. Mistake 1, right after I applied a layer of carnuba wax I thought it would add more than 3m layer and also more shine. The next time it started to rain I was surprised that the car didn't get a good clean like most new waxed cars. I found that I never let the 3m dry and the wax almost never stuck to it. To conclude that it was my fault, I started all over again. I washed the car with wax remover and dried it. 3m was reapplied, removed and left in the garage overnight. The next morning I added wax. Shine now, protection is excellent, shines well. For those who want it easy, just read the guide. For those who don't wear a top coat, great, no big deal but doesn't hurt and definitely adds another layer of protection.
