I purchased this item from Revain about 6 months ago. It worked very well for 5 months and then lost connection to my modem. After several calls to Time Warner who were very helpful in diagnosing and locating the problem, they informed me that my modem is working fine and I have a problem with my router. Then I called tech support to ask for help. I contacted an agent (in Asia?) and they started asking for my name, phone number, address, serial number, email address etc. All questions before she knew what my problem was! They finally told me that I had a software problem and that they would have to charge me to fix my problem as my 6 month support guarantee had expired! First of all, I never had the slightest idea or knowledge that software and hardware have different warranty periods, and if the router stops working after six months, I have to pay $40 to get help when I need a new router for more or more can buy less. same price! I asked her how does she know my problem is software and not hardware? she replied that with the hardware I wouldn't see any lights on my router? So it's definitely a software issue, and then she added (that's really gross!) that she knows how to fix it, but I have to pay for it! How the hell does she know what my problem is without testing it online and asking me more questions? I told her I would not pay any money for her services and would never buy Netgear or recommend it to anyone! That's where the story ends, but the fun begins the next day when I'm bombarded with emails and spam from "iYogi" for thanking me for signing up and helping me with my technical issues. I now understand that Netgear is contacting a second party to provide tech support and charge their customers! They only sell their products with misleading information and undisclosed support for their products. In the end I decided to reboot the router and start the router installation over by connecting my computer directly to the router. This solved my problem in just ten minutes! Couldn't they just tell me to take this action and then call them if the problem isn't resolved? This is absolutely horrible and extremely provocative behavior to find a way to scam your customers! I am very disappointed in Netgear, their support system and their after-sales policy. My router is working fine at the moment but when it stops crashing and giving me problems I will definitely not be buying from them again. I hope Netgear will review their policies and educate their support staff (outsourced staff) to stop thinking about making money before they at least offer a few simple suggestions on how to fix problems.
