Review on πŸ”₯ High-Speed 4-Bay Trayless Hot Swap Mobile Rack Backplane for 3.5in SAS II/SATA III - 6 Gbps HDD by StarTech.com (Model: HSB4SATSASBA) by Vincent Blitz

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Inexpensive for the features it offers, a loud fan that is fortunately replaceable.

I have been using this drive enclosure in my home environment on a FreeBSD ZFS NAS with four Seagate Ironwolf 4TB drives 24/7 for about 20 months. I had no issues with the reliability of the case or the hard drives. It's nice not to have to deal with the drive sled - just slide the drive into the basket and close the door. In operation, I don't find the status LEDs too bright, they are just right. As noted by some reviewers, the 80mm fan is louder than it should be. Luckily, it can be replaced with a low-profile 80mm fan of your choice. I installed a Cooler Master fan, which subjectively moves as much air as the original fan, but without the annoying hum. I connected the fan's power supply to an unused fan connector on the motherboard, which meant I had to cut a small hole in the fan shroud for the fan wires to run through. Not so hot what's up. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005C31GIA/ If StarTech raise the price by $5 and install a quality fan I would give it 5 stars.

Pros
  • KEEP THE OPTIMAL TEMPERATURE. To prevent drive failures, the removable frame's aluminum rear panel provides drive cooling with a built-in fan and excellent heat dissipation with a ventilated housing.
Cons
