Let me preface what I'm about to say my old dog HATED brushing so much we stopped doing it it was just a hassle for everyone. It probably didn't help that we tried to teach her that when she was already 10 years old. She was long dead and I knew that if I ever had another puppy I would make her young with these good habits. So. Fast forward a year and I found my 1 year old lifeguard boy, he was adept at all things: nail clippers, groomers, lawn mowers, planes in the sky, you name it. After working really hard with him and getting him to trust me, I can say that he's okay with all of these things now. So I was pretty sure he could handle the brushing since he had learned to trust me with it. We started slow and just let him lick/taste the paste (he loves it and it's great). Then rub it on your gums, tongue and teeth. Every day we did more and more, put him on a brush and let him lick the brush etc. I would say within a week I brushed his teeth completely with no major problems. He freaks out when I take out his toothpaste and brush it. After a few days we even noticed a difference in his breathing and the appearance of his teeth. So far so good and hopefully he avoids mouth problems with some chew toys/sticks afterwards!
