I have an older motherboard that doesn't have a native NVMe SSD slot and has 4 slots that do. For an older system (Legacy Win 7), this adapter card provided a way to add PCIe M.2 capabilities. Even if the Win 7 system only has one free PCIe 2.0 slot, it still offers a fast area for data access. For us it's a place to store virtual machines, which are inherently slower as everything is done in software, and this card compensates for that latency along with an NVMe M.2 2280 PCIe SSD. I use one in a full height medium tower case and the other in a half height HP slim case.
