Review on πŸ”Œ Rivo PCI-E Riser: High-Speed M.2 PCIe SSD to PCIe Express 3.0 x4 Adapter Card - NVMe/AHCI Support, M-Key, 2280/2260/2242/2230 SSD Compatibility by Dan Sturm

For motherboards that don't have their own NVMe SSD slot

I have an older motherboard that doesn't have a native NVMe SSD slot and has 4 slots that do. For an older system (Legacy Win 7), this adapter card provided a way to add PCIe M.2 capabilities. Even if the Win 7 system only has one free PCIe 2.0 slot, it still offers a fast area for data access. For us it's a place to store virtual machines, which are inherently slower as everything is done in software, and this card compensates for that latency along with an NVMe M.2 2280 PCIe SSD. I use one in a full height medium tower case and the other in a half height HP slim case.

Pros
