The end holes on the bracket are exactly 16 inches apart. The house has studs that are slightly further apart (about 17.5 inches). I couldn't mount this on my wall without first attaching a large piece of wood to the back. This was a huge inconvenience that could have been avoided if this product had been made with extra holes to accommodate cheap builders with fewer bolts. The extra holes on the rear bracket only give the illusion of forbearance as they only work if your spikes are too close together. I believe this is much less common than the problem I'm having. On a positive note, the mount now holds very well. It has a HUGE range of motion and other than the issues I had, I'm pretty happy with it.
