I bought both the small and medium and let my 8 year old son decide which size he likes best. My 8 year old is of average height and weight. I think the small size was perfect for him but he preferred the medium size. It's on the younger/smaller end of the range recommended for a medium size and it's definitely a bit larger, but he was worried he'd outgrow the small too quickly, and he also claimed that the arms were in the small be too tight. (Disclaimer: I think he also prefers to be associated with "average" because he's already a big kid.) See photos. Excellent quality.
