Black socks are a must for my work attire. I used to have to buy a pack of gold socks every few years because the heels and balls of my toes wore out. I would even try stuffing them. I read the warranty and durability reviews on the Darn Tough socks and decided it was worth it. I started with 5 pairs and 5 years later they are in perfect shape, colors don't fade, heels and soles are firm with no flimsy spots, still snug enough to stay on calves without sagging even after 14 hours. Day. I wash them in cold water on a delicate dark woolite fabric and hang dry to extend their life. I bought a few more pairs so I don't wash as often. When my non-functioning socks wear out, I plan to replace them with Darn Tough socks. I see no reason to have anything else in my wardrobe as the cost of acquisition is definitely worth the longevity.
