I bought this dock hoping it would be the USB-A equivalent of a good USB-C based dock that I'm using for a new laptop. Unfortunately, due to bandwidth and power management limitations, you can't use all of the features at the same time. The HDMI output wasn't smooth and stable enough for me to use, so I left it disabled and instead connected the display directly to the laptop's mini-DP or HDMI output. When connecting a laptop, the Ethernet network sometimes does not turn on. Sometimes a connected USB drive won't turn on. Sometimes neither one nor the other works on the first try. This takes away from a lot of the convenience of having one connection to easily plug and unplug all peripherals when I still have to fiddle with powering on, disconnecting and reconnecting, and multiple retry attempts to get everything working again when I arrive. A house. At least I know that by upgrading to a newer device with USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 and a matching dock, things are finally getting close to the perfect single-plug experience we've been waiting for.
