Instructions say hair must be damp to work properly but I had great difficulty getting my daughter's hair through the rollers without snagging. And yes, her hair was brushed and detangled, and yes, the strands of hair were less than 1 inch long. Also, the hook continued to detach from the bottom. We tried to successfully curl her hair but it never worked. The first time I kept curlers for 4 hours and the second time all night. It was very strange! Only about 3 curls came out the first time. The second time, her hair just got curly. For reference, she has straight, thick, medium length hair.
