Why buy a $250 pistol mic and save on the cord? It is not as well shielded as an XLR cable but is superior to traditional 3.5mm stereo cables. I shoot DSLR video and wanted to just take my Rode Videomic Pro off the camera and this cable cuts the interference in half compared to Radio Shack's $7.95 3.5mm cable. But as mentioned, this is not an XLR cable. I have experienced cell phone interference when the sound tower operator receives an incoming message. Be careful when using this cable near oscillating AC or radio equipment, otherwise you will hear a hum. However, the cable is better shielded than a standard 3.5mm stereo cable. You just need to be aware of the limitations of your hardware. One last thing, don't forget to neatly coil the cord for storage. The screen will break if the cable is kinked, so be careful.
