Good not great hiking crampons

Used them on a 3 day trip Feb 2015 and 2 day Sierra hikes and they worked well. Conditions were ideal for testing Cats: lots of ice where there was snow and it was compacted with shallow holes for poles testing anchorages. Good:. Pretty easy. Size XL fits my size 14 winter boots. Quick on/off fastenings. PriceNot very good:. The bindings are not strong enough for real use in the Alps. Safety clips (not shown in photos, these are small red clips worn on belts) are essential. The reason for this is that if the snow is 4 inches thick or deeper, the quick release can lift and the crampons will fall off. This also means that the clamps have to be "tight" or this will happen anyway. Like all crampons, they work best with heavy boots that don't flex a lot. I've used them on day hikes with my Trail Runners and the bindings don't hang on the heel but on the toe and instep. This allows the heel to go up 1-1.5 inches if you walk fast, which is fine, but lengthen your stride and they can drop. (Aggravating). An Allen key is required for adjustment. Another detail, like safety clips that can get lost on the trail. Conclusion: Good crampons for infrequent use on the trail. MUCH safer than microspike overlays which can slip off when walking uphill. (They will, trust me. Don't use them.) Not meant to compete with serious alpine cats, so smaller fingers will suffice. One star deducted because if the bindings were improved this would be a great option for camping cats.
