A hole appeared after washing and trying on

This balaclava is made of fleece material. I bought it for my kids to wear on a ski trip. It sits well on the head and appears to be of good thickness. However, we washed it before the trip (to reduce the smell) and my son noticed a hole in the top afterwards. As the hole appeared after we washed them once (and didn't use them much) I'm not sure they will last long.
