It looked like a great backpack for me to take my little toddler on short hikes. I like the design and construction in general, especially the high visibility orange and gray color for safety. But there are a few questions. Firstly, when you buy one of these backpacks, there are two versions, one with a small detachable backpack and one without. For ten bucks more, get the one with the detachable backpack. It's not big enough for an adult or large child, but ideal for a toddler who is starting to walk more confidently. Second, the inner straps are unnecessarily complex. It uses a double buckle system, much like a car seat or luxury high chair. But he doesn't need to, because the kid is actually sitting in a big bucket and still can't move or run away. There really should be a buckle or harness, but I found the device used here unnecessarily restrictive (it's like a straitjacket for older kids and it made my son scream and he didn't like being tied up - even the loosest). Third, the backpack needs an extra handle strap or repositioning of the handle strap to lift it off the ground with the child. There is only one handle strap and because of its location, the center of gravity makes the entire bag spring towards you. Then you have a long object at a 45 degree angle with your child in it and you have to pick it up with your back bent to try and lift the backpack over your shoulders. It's hard to describe in text, but anyone who's run with a 50-60 pound backpack knows what I'm talking about. Your strap should always be at the top, next to the side of the pack where your head is. Fourth, this backpack is smaller than expected. The storage space was huge, but the actual space for my child was much smaller than I expected. My 14 month old didn't fit (at least I didn't use the inner straps which were too small and tight). I'm not sure how they chose the max capacity but I understand this pack can only hold 40lbs (including the storage tray). It doesn't leave much room or weight for a baby over 12 months - and I thought I saw that in a toddler ad. Things I didn't really like about the way this pack was presented at Revain. The company seems to be emphasizing the connection to Ireland, but the bag is made in China. I was expecting European design and manufacture, not Chinese. Also, I have bought a lot of family gear for our son, so I fully understand that what works for one family may not work for another. If you order something by mail order and don't get a chance to try it in store, all you have to do is order it and hope it works, but if not, you can return it. However, if you buy this pack and it doesn't work, you'll be charged for the returns even if you're a Prime member. Over twenty dollars for returning this package! Just be aware of this if you think you're going to try.
