Not everything or a bag of chips

Oh samurai, are you the droid I've been looking for? Your price is the same as my old Roomella's much younger brother, the Roomba 694. They tell me your specs are almost the same. You've got an app, you can plan, you know boundaries, you take commands from Google Assistant, you're short as a common guy and fit for a lot of things, and you know where home is when you get tired of everything. your work. But are you the one? In a word, no. Let's imagine for a moment that the Samurai here and its competitor at the same price are perfect examples that live up to their performance 100%. My 14 year old Roomella (Roomba 500 series) has lived a long time and I can still get parts for it directly from the manufacturer. So I expect iRobot will continue to support its 694 for many years to come. Also, there are all the community folks doing crazy things with Roombas and aftermarket folks selling beats for them. Samurai... Well, I think in a few years he'll be a paperweight. Where can I get a new battery, charger, remote control, brushes, sensors or other things that might wear out now? Ah, nowhere. I observe. Unless something magical happens to this foreign brand, it's a $250 item to be thrown away when it breaks. . Is that all samurai? Fur. It has two side brushes compared to Roombas and unlike some other cheap brushes on the bottom. Oh, and unlike Roomba, everything you need to keep it running is included right in the box at no extra cost. (The 694 beacon/virtual wall will cost you sixty dollars and doesn't use the original version.) So let's check out this deny access feature that makes sure the samurai doesn't go where it doesn't go. searched. Yes it works! It's a magnetic strip and you get two rolls, which is about 20 feet (not measured, just estimated based on how I've used it). I tried another magnetic strip I had on hand, narrower and thinner, but that didn't stop the samurai. Maybe something closer to the same size as the original would fit? I can no longer buy any more of this original material as mentioned above. Well, you can't just stick this stuff in. Oh no, you have to protect him somehow, otherwise the samurai will end up piling him up and putting him aside, defeating his intention. Will I glue/nail some magnetic strips to the wooden floor? No way, my friend, no way. For testing I used painters tape to hold it in place. If I didn't have duct tape every few feet, the samurai would have screwed up and escaped. Well the function works, but it's not what we want. The samurai was no better than old Roomella when moving about the house. He managed to get under the table (see photo), tangled in the cords, caught on the edge of the carpet and got caught on the adapter. Unlike Rumella, he had a habit of turning over the edges of rugs and getting tangled in them. Did I mention he's not the brightest light in a lamp? The second time around the house, he got lost and couldn't find his way home. Although I let him try. At 2% battery life, I felt sorry for it and parked it a few feet from its dock. Out of curiosity I caught it in a 10x10 area and it still took >10 minutes to find its way back home. It generally rattles around the house in much the same way as the device I was hoping to replace. He has no idea if he cleaned the room or not, he just keeps walking until his battery dies. If it weren't for the beacons, the 694 and my old model would have done the same. What about this app, huh? It's more like two applications. You need the main app and another one to get voice control and such. It doesn't recognize the houses you've set up in Google Home and for some reason it can't determine where you are even though you have permission to get location data. The app allows you to control the samurai, should send you alerts when problems arise (not always) and let you know how long the samurai will run and how much battery it has left. Based on the latter, I can easily tell you that the 150+ minute runtime claim is nonsense. The samurai wasn't good for more than an hour before he started limping home. Cleaning. Gotta cover it up, right? In truth, the samurai does a good job finding something to take home. I trapped him again in a 10x10 area and left some things for him to find. Toaster crumbs, pencil sharpener shavings, broom dust, rice chips and cat food. After a run (yes, an hour) it was hard to find anything the samurai had left behind. At least one win for the little guy! I'll give the samurai 2. I leaned towards three as almost everything worked as it should. But the same features are available in other no-name models that cost less, and some in the same price range have more features. In short, the Samurai is nothing special and loses to the competition. If someone wants to invest in someone else's brand, get one that has as many features as possible. Move buyers with a discount, it's not that much.
