These displays are inexpensive compared to similar products but are fully functional. At this price it is unreasonable to expect solid oak and treated wood or perfect hinges. The wood is unfinished and the hinges on mine creak a bit and when I first opened my boxes they were a bit stiff. Despite this, the product is better than expected. I use mine to display rock and mineral samples and I've already ordered 4 of these (2 with spacers and 2 with just the box open) and they work great. I love the fact that half of the lid is higher than the box so the jar is at least an inch or more above the top of the box. this means that even bulky parts that look like they won't fit fit very well in the box. The wood is rough and untreated which I think is perfect for rock, mineral and gemstone sampling. If you would like the wood to be smoother, simply sand down with fine sandpaper and then apply a light coat of Linseed Oil or Cutting Board Oil (the Orange Cutting Board Oil available from Revain works great). If you're looking for more technical performance, this wood is fairly light and porous and could easily use a coat of stain or vartan if you really want to protect it. For mineral and gem collectors who are tired of storing things in cardboard boxes and cheap plastic boxes, these boxes are a huge improvement in quality and looks. Now my stuff doesn't look like boxes full of rocks collected by some crazy curmudgeon, they look like fine pieces in professional collector's boxes. I will order at least 4 more of these. If you get a broken one I don't think it matters as at this price point they really do steal.
