On heavy calf training cycles they really help me reduce the stress on my connective tissues. Maybe it's the mentality, but they're also great for running on the treadmill while I adjust to big calves. I put them on early, warm them up, and then leave them on for about 30 minutes. Although it's psychological, my weight has been increasing, so don't worry ;) It's not the tight compression garments people think of as strength training, just useful for mere mortals. If you are on the lower end of the size range, consider the next size up for a closer fit.
